Case study writing cost

The price of one B2B customer case study, from Fiverr gigs to platforms that book your customer and get the sign-off, with the interview checked on every package before it counted.

The short answer

$60 to $3,450

Key takeaways
  • 01Most of the case study writing cost is not the writing. The same 1,000 to 1,500 word customer story ran from $60 to $3,450 across the 31 seller prices we could compare, and what moves it is who runs the customer interview and who chases the approval.
  • 02On the marketplaces the interview is often yours to run. Fifteen of the 34 Fiverr and Upwork listings we read sell no seller-run customer interview at any price, including the most-reviewed gig in our Fiverr sample, which 'does not include design or interviews'.
  • 03The interview has a price you can see. One Upwork seller with 275 reviews charges $750 if you already ran the interview and $1,000 if the seller runs it, and marketplace interview extras run from $20 to $100.
  • 04The top of the market sells the approval chase. The two platforms that book your customer and get their sign-off start at $2,300 and $3,450; Uplift, from $750, hands the edited draft back for you to send to your customer.
  • 05The evidence is thin and old. Only seven agencies and two platforms publish a price that buys this spec, two of the three rate surveys date from 2020 and the third has no case study row, and the top five results for the main search are written for students.

Search case study writing cost and all five top US results we read are for students: a Reddit thread recommending essay services, two essay sites, a promotional post on a college's site and a forum where someone paid 'like $60 for a 7-page paper'. Search how much does a case study cost and the pages that answer it give ranges without naming a source.

So this page prices one thing: a 1,000 to 1,500 word B2B customer case study with one recorded customer interview, a draft, one round of edits and the customer's approval, delivered as a document with no design. Each price was read on the page it links to on 12 October 2026, in US dollars, and a listing that sells no interview is shown and left out of every range.

If you write case studies and are setting your own case study writing rates, the survey rows are your peers, but two of the three are from 2020 and the third prices business writing with no interview. Several agency and platform figures are 'from' floors, so a quote after a discovery call can be higher, and Upwork prices exclude Upwork's client fees.

The price, by route

Case study writing cost, route by route

Each bar runs from the cheapest to the most expensive published price we read for this route, normalised to the same spec. The dot is the middle price. The axis is logarithmic: each gridline is ten times the one before.

In-house is not sampled. It uses the salary data for AI Content Writer (mid-level median, $84,000 base), loaded at 1.3x and divided by 3 to 6 case studies a month. The count is our assumption, not a measured figure. The role page's 8 to 20 pieces a month is for formats a writer controls; each case study also needs a customer to agree, an interview to book and run, and an approval round, and no survey times those.

The evidence

How the marketplace prices were drawn: Fiverr: search 'b2b case study' (https://www.fiverr.com/search/gigs?query=b2b%20case%20study), 'Sort by: Relevance' (the default), 387 results, read 2026-10-12 in a real Chrome window over the DevTools protocol with Fiverr's logged_out_currency cookie set to USD (the visitor IP was not American, so result order may differ for a US visitor). The broader 'case study writing' search (22,000+) and the 'Case Study Writing' category (17,000+) were tried first and are dominated by student essay gigs, so they were not sampled. From positions 1-39 of two loads of the 'b2b case study' results, every gig selling a written B2B or customer case study was opened (18 gigs); excluded were design-only gigs, academic and assignment gigs, video editing, white-paper-only gigs, interview-preparation gigs and two topic-research write-ups. Two more gigs came from the search 'customer success story' (charlotte4332, shijujimthomas). 20 Fiverr gigs in all. Upwork: Project Catalog search 'b2b case study' (https://www.upwork.com/services/search?q=b2b%20case%20study), default order, page 1 (24 listings), read the same day the same way. Kept 14; excluded design-only (2), academic research-analysis (4), white papers (2), a blog post and an editing listing. Package rule, both sites: a listing priced per standard case study counts as the spec unless it states a length below 1,000 words. Where tiers differ by length, take the lowest tier reaching 1,000 words (pages converted at the EFA's 250 words a page). The seller must conduct the customer interview: if no tier at that length includes it but a paid 'Client interviews' extra exists, add the extra; if neither, the row is null with what it would cost. Upwork prices exclude Upwork's client fees. Contra: three listings found through web search, none with a seller-run interview at the listed price, none counted.

Not a criticism. Quoting per project is normal when the work varies. It does mean the ranges above describe the providers who publish, and the ones who do not are rarely the cheapest.

What moves the price

Why one case study costs 57 times another

Who runs the customer interview and who chases the customer's sign-off, not the word count.

  1. 01

    Who runs the customer interview

The clearest published price of an interview comes from the most-reviewed seller in our Upwork sample: $750 when 'You already interviewed client' and $1,000 when the seller runs it. Marketplace interview extras run from $20 to $100, and Express Writers sells its 20 to 30 minute interview for $175.

    Upwork listing, Martin C.
  2. 02

    Who chases the customer's approval

Compose.ly, from $2,300, says it handles 'the interviews, writing, and client approvals', and Authentic Marketer's $1,110 package includes 'Client follow-up to lock in interview and get approval to publish'. Uplift, from $750, makes edits 'before you send it off to your customer for approval', so the chase stays with you.

    Uplift Content case study service
  3. 03

    Design and layout

A case study is often sold as a designed PDF, with the design priced on top. One Fiverr seller charges $450 for the copy and interview and $600 with a branded design; Notis Press puts a designed PDF in its $950 tier; Testimonial Hero's full written bundle, with a one-pager, sales slide and quote cards, is $4,370 against $3,450 for the case study.

  4. 04

A human writer or an AI draft

Testimonial Hero's AI-assisted case study starts at $2,530 against $3,450 for a human writer, $920 apart, and the interview and approvals are still bought either way. One Upwork seller charges $400 for a case study 'assisted by ChatGPT' and $700 for a human-written one.

    Subject expertise

nDash's 2020 guide priced the same 800 to 1,000 word business case study, with an hour-long call, at an average of $100 from a generalist, $300 from a writer familiar with the topic and $850 from a technical expert. Technical experts in industrial, legal and science topics averaged $1,500.

  6. 06

    Delivery time

On one Upwork listing the tiers differ only in speed: the same 1,000-word case study is $100 in 21 days, $200 in 14 and $400 in 7, plus $50 if the seller runs the interview.

Building it with AI

What the machine costs, and what it does not

Nine current models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google would turn an interview transcript into this case study for between one cent and $1.25, on our token estimate. None of them books the customer, asks the follow-up question or gets the sign-off. StoryVoice, at $39 a story, goes further, with a five-minute voice AI interview the customer takes alone. The receipt prices one mid-range model, then the hours that remain.

What AI cannot do here
  • Persuade a busy customer to spend an hour on the record
  • Ask the follow-up question that turns 'it saved us time' into a number
  • Confirm the figures with the customer's own team
  • Get the customer's legal or communications team to sign off the quotes

Edit hours: Our editorial estimate for writing the questions and running the customer interview (nDash's guide assumes an hour-long call), checking every quote and figure in the draft against the transcript, rewriting it in the customer's voice and making their changes. No survey measures it. The hourly rate is the same loaded in-house figure used for the in-house route, so the two are comparable.

Doing it yourself

What a case study takes to do yourself

No survey times the whole job. The 2026 rate chart from the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) puts business writing at 1.5 to 4.5 pages of 250 words an hour, about 1.1 to 3.3 hours for 1,250 words, and hand transcription at 20 audio minutes an hour. The other rows are our estimate, and none of them counts the days spent waiting for the customer.

Editorial estimate

No independent survey measures this, so the hours are our editorial estimate.

At the same loaded rate as an in-house hire ($53 an hour), your 4.1 to 9.3 hours are worth $215 to $488.

  • Choose the customer and ask them to go on record30 to 60 min

01

The interview is yours unless the package says otherwise

The most-reviewed gig in our Fiverr sample, with 2,549 ratings, sells 1,000 words for $175 and says: 'It does not include design or interviews. All information for the case study must be provided.' Across the 34 Fiverr and Upwork listings we read, 15 sell no seller-run customer interview at any price, three of them ambiguously.

02

The approval chase ends at your desk

Uplift, from $750, makes 'as many edits as you need before you send it off to your customer for approval.' One interview-led Fiverr gig says: 'You are responsible for obtaining permission to use the customer's name, logo, quotations, data, and results.' Of the 13 prices we counted outside the marketplaces, five say nothing about who gets the sign-off.

Uplift Content case study service
03

An interview add-on may not be with your customer

Express Writers' $175 add-on is 'One 20–30 minute interview with a vetted professional in your field', sold for expert quotes; you name the interviewee after checkout. One Fiverr gig sells a $20 'Client interviews' extra while its own FAQ says 'Live interviews are not included in standard packages' and offers a list of questions instead. Ask who is interviewed, by whom, and for how long.

04

A listing that contradicts itself

One Fiverr gig with no ratings ticks 'Client interviews' on every package while each package description, copied word for word from another seller's gig, promises a case study 'based on a prerecorded interview'. We counted its $1,300 at the price a buyer could be charged. Ask in writing who runs the interview before you order.

Guides that price vendors who have moved on

A 2026 list prices Case Study Buddy at USD 4,725, but its domain now redirects to Testimonial Hero. Column's case study page returns 'Page not found'. A July 2026 list gives StoryVoice monthly plans at $49, $99 and $249; it now sells $39 a story. Two 2026 lists credit the same three tiers to Uplift and to Concurate, and Uplift's own page says $750.

The cost of doing nothing

What not having it costs, in your numbers rather than ours

Without published customer stories, the proof still gets asked for, and it is paid for in customers' goodwill and your team's hours. Here is where it goes, and a sum you can do with your own figures.

  • Reference calls spend the same customers

A late-stage buyer who wants proof from a company like theirs gets a live reference call instead. Each call uses a named customer's goodwill and calendar, so the same few get asked again and again, and they run out before the deals do.

  • The willingness to go on record expires

The champion who would give the interview changes jobs, the before-and-after numbers stop being recent, and the customer's legal team gets stricter. A story not captured while the result is fresh may never be approvable later.

  • Answer engines cite someone else's customers

Search engines and AI assistants can only cite outcomes that are published. A buyer asking which vendors have solved their problem for a company like theirs gets an answer built from other companies' customer stories.

busyless runs on a retainer. A Fractional Head of Content, from $5,000 a month and month to month, owns the system: which channels we bet on, the editorial standard, customer interviews, the conversion path and the monthly report.

Production sits underneath as execution capacity, from $2,000 a month, through agents I have built or people I manage. We make as much as growth needs, so a price per piece would measure the count rather than whether it worked.

Most clients start with Discovery: two weeks and $2,500 for the diagnosis and a 90-day plan, theirs to keep either way.

30 minutes. We talk about what's already working, who owns content today, and whether a fractional Head of Content is actually the right move. If it isn't, I'll say so.

FAQ

Frequently asked

  • Why is the cheapest case study $60 and the dearest $3,450?
Because a quote prices the jobs around the writing. Across the seller prices on this page, the same 1,000 to 1,500 words ran from $60 to $3,450. Who books and runs the customer interview, who gets the customer's sign-off and whether design is bundled move the price far more than length does.
  • Should you buy a case study on Fiverr or Upwork?
Yes, if you will run the interview yourself or confirm in writing that the seller does. Fifteen of the 34 Fiverr and Upwork listings we read sell no seller-run customer interview at any price, and the ones that counted ran from $60 to $1,300. Most cheap gigs write up an interview you supply, so count your own hour on the call and the approval chase as part of the price.
  • How much does a seller charge to run the case study interview?
On the marketplaces, $20 to $100 as an extra; Express Writers charges $175 for a 20 to 30 minute interview. The clearest figure is one Upwork seller's: $750 if you have already interviewed the customer and $1,000 if the seller does it, so the interview is $250. Check that the add-on means your customer, not expert quotes or a list of questions.
  • Who should chase the customer's approval for a case study?
Whoever the customer will answer. Of the 13 prices we counted outside the marketplaces, seven say the provider gets the sign-off, five say nothing and one, Uplift, hands the draft back to you. If nobody owns it, a finished draft can sit unpublished while the customer's legal or communications team reads it, after the interview and writing are paid for.
  • What is left to pay for once AI drafts the case study?
Almost everything but the draft. Nine current models would write it from a transcript for one cent to $1.25 on our token estimate, and transcribing a 45-minute call costs 20 cents. Booking the customer, asking the follow-up question and getting the sign-off still take a person, which is why Testimonial Hero's AI-assisted case study starts at $2,530. With those hours priced, the receipt above comes to $158 to $315.
  • Why does a case study take weeks when the writing takes hours?
Because the customer sets the pace. At the EFA's writing pace the draft itself is about 1.1 to 3.3 hours. Compose.ly quotes 5 to 7 business days once the interviews are done and the brief approved, Authentic Marketer 14 business days to a draft after the interview, and Notis Press two to three weeks, 'depending on client response times and customer availability for interviews'. No provider publishes how long the customer's approval takes.
  • Would a staff writer make your case studies cheaper?
Rarely on case studies alone. A mid-level AI content writer, loaded for payroll and benefits, costs $9,100 a month, which is $1,517 to $3,033 a case study at three to six a month, above all but one of the seven agency prices we read. A hire pays off when the same person writes everything else too, and case studies are one job among several.
  • Does busyless write case studies?
As part of the work, not by the piece. busyless runs the customer interviews the content comes out of: from $5,000 a month I lead the work, including which customer stories sales needs, and production from $2,000 a month writes them up, through agents or people. There is no per-piece price. If you only need a case study, the routes on this page are the way to buy one.
