An SEO Marketing Manager runs the organic program day to day. They sit between the specialists doing the work and whoever owns the strategy, and their job is turning a roadmap into shipped output on a predictable cadence.
It is the least glamorous of the three common SEO titles and often the most useful. Plenty of companies have a strategy nobody executes and specialists with no sequencing. A manager fixes exactly that, and does it faster than a leadership hire because the job is operational rather than political.
This page covers what the role owns, three templates you can post as-is, salary by seniority, and a straightforward test for whether you need this, a specialist, or a Head of SEO.
What does an SEO Marketing Manager do?
The core of the job is program management with real search judgment attached. Turning a quarterly roadmap into weekly work, sequencing it so dependencies do not stall, chasing the content and engineering handoffs, and keeping the whole thing moving when three other teams have different priorities.
The second part is doing the work that has not been delegated. At most companies an SEO Manager is still hands-on: running the keyword research, writing the briefs, doing the on-page optimization, reviewing technical tickets. The proportion falls as the team grows, but a manager who cannot do the work loses the specialists' respect quickly.
The third is reporting upward and sideways. Weekly to their own leadership, monthly to the wider marketing team, and continuously to whoever is waiting on a dependency. Being the person who reliably knows the current state of the program is more of the value than it sounds.
What the role does not usually own is the strategy or the budget. That distinction is the whole difference between this and a Head of SEO, and blurring it in the job ad is the most common reason the hire disappoints one side or the other.
SEO Marketing Manager duties and responsibilities
The exact mix depends on team size and whether a strategy already exists.
- 01Turn the quarterly search roadmap into sequenced weekly work with owners and dates.
- 02Run keyword and opportunity research, and keep the priority list current as results come in.
- 03Brief content, review drafts for search quality, and manage the publishing queue.
- 04Review and chase technical tickets through the engineering backlog.
- 05Manage one to three specialists, freelancers or an agency, including quality control.
- 06Own on-page optimization and internal linking across priority pages.
- 07Run the reporting cadence: weekly to leadership, monthly to the wider team.
- 08Monitor competitors and rankings, and escalate meaningful movement rather than noise.
- 09Track AI answer visibility alongside classic rankings and include it in reporting.
- 10Keep the roadmap honest by flagging when a dependency has stalled, early rather than late.

SEO Marketing Manager skills and qualifications
This role is judged on throughput and reliability more than on insight. Screen accordingly.
- Sequencing
- Turns a roadmap into work in the right order, with dependencies identified before they stall. The single most valuable skill in the role and the least discussed.
- Follow-through
- Chases handoffs across content and engineering without becoming the person whose messages get muted. Persistence and likeability at the same time.
- Hands-on search execution
- Still runs research, writes briefs and does on-page work. A manager who cannot do the work loses the specialists' respect within a quarter.
- Quality control
- Reviews other people's output against a standard and gives feedback that improves it, whether that output comes from a junior or an agency.
- Reporting discipline
- Produces the same report on the same day every month, and states a flat result plainly rather than finding a metric that moved.
- Agency management
- Holds a vendor to outcomes, spots coasting early, and can distinguish a genuinely hard quarter from a poorly staffed account.
- Technical literacy
- Enough to review a ticket, judge whether a fix landed, and tell when an engineering objection is real.
- AI visibility tracking
- Monitors citation share alongside rankings and folds it into standard reporting rather than treating it as a one-off experiment.
- Escalating early
- Raises a stalled dependency in week two rather than at the quarterly review. Managers who hide slippage are worse than no manager at all.
SEO Marketing Manager experience requirements
Three to six years in SEO, usually with some program or people management. Candidates typically arrive as strong specialists who took on coordination, which is the right path for this role.
Ask about a quarter that slipped. Every program has one. What you are listening for is whether they saw it early, told somebody, and adjusted, or whether it surfaced at the review. The answer predicts how you will find out about problems at your company.
Be wary of candidates who describe themselves purely as strategic at this level. The role requires doing the work, and somebody who has moved past that will be frustrated within six months and will not say so until they resign.
Equally, be wary of pure executors with no coordination experience. The step up from doing your own work to sequencing three people's is real, and candidates who have never done it often underestimate how much of the job is chasing.
SEO Marketing Manager education and training requirements
No degree matters here. Marketing and communications backgrounds are common; so are people who fell into SEO from an adjacent role and were good at it.
Certifications are weak signals but not worthless at this level: they at least confirm tooling familiarity. A portfolio of pages with before-and-after data, or a roadmap they built and executed, is worth considerably more.

Base salary only, United States, July 2026. Blended from Indeed, Glassdoor, Payscale, ZipRecruiter and Salary.com reported ranges, then adjusted down to exclude bonus and equity, which several of those sources fold into total pay. Treat these as a budgeting starting point, not a benchmark. New York and San Francisco run 15 to 25 percent above these figures. Fully remote roles hiring outside major metros run 10 to 20 percent below.
Full-time hire or fractional? What each one actually costs
This is the role where the fractional comparison is most direct, because the job is execution rather than politics. If you have a strategy and no capacity, an outside operator covers it cleanly. If you have people who need managing, you need a manager, and no engagement structure changes that.

How to hire an SEO Marketing Manager
- 01
Work out which of the three roles you need
A Specialist does the work. A Manager sequences it and chases dependencies. A Head decides what the work is and owns the budget. Most companies advertise for the wrong one. If you already have a strategy and it is not happening, you need a Manager.
- 02
Say how hands-on the role is
Candidates read manager and expect delegation. If they will be running research and writing briefs, say so. This mismatch produces a resignation at month eight and a bad reference conversation.
- 03
Test sequencing with a real backlog
Give them twenty items from your actual backlog and ask what happens in what order and why. You will immediately see whether they think in dependencies or just in priority scores.
- 04
Ask how they chase without irritating
Half the role is getting other teams to do things they did not plan for. Candidates who describe escalation as their first move will burn your cross-functional relationships within two quarters.
- 05
Check they will report a flat month plainly
Ask what they would put in a report where nothing moved. Anyone who reaches for a secondary metric to soften it will do the same when it matters, and you will find out late.
Interview questions for SEO Marketing Managers
Here are 20 items from our backlog. What order, and why?
Listen for Dependency thinking, not just impact scoring. Strong candidates group work so one engineering ticket unblocks several content items, and they ask what capacity exists before answering.
A technical fix you need has been in engineering's backlog for two quarters. What now?
Listen for Quantifying the cost, finding a smaller version, building a relationship with the team rather than escalating first. Candidates whose only tool is escalation will exhaust their credit quickly.
Your agency's monthly deliverable has quietly got thinner. How do you handle it?
Listen for Evidence first, then a direct conversation against agreed outcomes. Candidates who would either say nothing or immediately recommend firing them are both missing the middle.
Tell me about a quarter where the plan slipped.
Listen for Early detection, a decision about what to drop, and communicating it upward before the review. Candidates whose plans never slip have either not run one or are editing.
What goes in the report for a month where nothing moved?
Listen for A plain statement of the flat result, a diagnosis, and what changes next month. Reaching for a metric that happened to rise is the answer you do not want.
How much of your week is doing versus coordinating?
Listen for A realistic split and comfort with both. Candidates who want zero hands-on work at this band will be unhappy, and candidates who want zero coordination are applying for the specialist role.
SEO Marketing Manager FAQs
What is the difference between an SEO Manager and an SEO Specialist?
A Specialist does the work on their own queue. A Manager sequences work across people, chases the dependencies, and owns the reporting cadence. At small companies one person does both, and the ad should say so. The signal you need a Manager is a strategy that exists but is not happening. What is the difference between an SEO Manager and a Head of SEO?
Strategy and budget. A Manager executes a plan and runs the program. A Head decides what the plan is, owns the budget, and argues for resources at leadership level. Hiring a Manager and expecting strategy is a common and avoidable disappointment. How much does an SEO Marketing Manager cost in 2026?
In the US, roughly $72,000 to $102,000 base at mid level and $95,000 to $132,000 at senior. Add about 30 percent for the fully loaded cost. Tooling and content production budget sit on top and are usually a larger line than people expect.Should an SEO Manager still do hands-on work?
At almost every company below a team of four, yes, and the ad should say so. The proportion falls as the team grows, but a manager who has stopped doing the work loses the specialists' respect and the ability to judge quality.Do I need an SEO Manager or an agency?
An agency executes; a manager decides what gets executed and holds them to it. Companies that hire an agency with nobody internal owning the relationship tend to get competent work aimed at the wrong things. If you already have an agency and no internal owner, a manager is usually the higher-leverage hire.Is SEO Manager the same as SEO Marketing Manager?
In practice yes. The longer title tends to appear at companies where the role sits inside a broader marketing team rather than a dedicated search function, and sometimes implies a wider brief including content or paid. Read the duties, not the title. How long before an SEO Manager shows results?
One to two quarters, faster than a leadership hire because the job is operational. Expect cadence and follow-through to improve within weeks, and traffic to follow the usual three to six month curve. Can this role be covered fractionally?
The execution half, yes, cleanly, because the work is well-defined and does not require presence in internal politics. The supervising half cannot: if you have SEO staff who need a manager, hire one.
