Content writing pricing

What 1,000 words cost on a writer's own rate card, per word, per piece or per hour, from Fiverr sellers to independent writers, converted to the same spec with the arithmetic beside it.

The short answer

$10 to $985

per 1,000 words, from people and companies. AI tools are priced separately below.

Freelance marketplace, middle
$35
Writing or production platform, middle
$130
Independent specialist, middle
$700
Agency or studio, middle
$95

Priced for: 1,000 words of general web content, such as an article, guide or web page, written to your brief by a professional generalist writer, with one revision round, delivered as a document. No subject expertise, interviews, images or upload. Where a seller has quality levels, the middle one is counted.

Key takeaways
  • 01Content writing pricing depends on the door more than the words. Across the 66 seller prices we could compare, 1,000 words ran from $10 on Fiverr to $985 from an independent writer, and the middle marketplace price was $35.
  • 02The top star costs the most. Textbroker charges $23.50, $32.50 and $90.50 for 1,000 words at three, four and five stars, so a five-star piece costs 2.8 times a four-star one, and Textbroker says its stars rate spelling, grammar and style, not expertise.
  • 03Upwork disagrees with itself. Its rate guide puts intermediate writers at 30 to 50 cents a word, $300 to $500 for 1,000 words, while its own Project Catalog sold 1,000 words at a median of $40 across the 22 listings we read.
  • 04The usual shortlists are out of date. Crowd Content is now Stellar, iwriter.com redirects to FreeUp, HireWriters has become Toptal Writers, Scripted now sells an 'AI CMO' with no per-word rate, and Draft closed on 23 August 2026.
  • 05Two widely repeated rate figures are weaker than they look: a report titled 2026 whose income question asks about 2020, and a $0.42-a-word average from '500 writers' that publishes no method.

Search content writing pricing and the first US result is a writing company's guide that ends in its own packages. None of the top five cites a source for a price per word or per piece; one UK page cites a source for its day rate, in pounds.

So this page prices the writer's rate card: 1,000 words of general web content written to your brief, with one revision round. Every content writing cost below is converted to that spec from a price read at its source on 12 October 2026, in US dollars. The finished, researched B2B post is priced separately, on the blog posts page.

If you write for clients and are setting your own freelance writing rates, the survey rows are your benchmark, and they disagree: a 2,080-writer global survey puts the middle at $10 to $24 an hour, while the EFA's members report a median range of 25 to 45 cents a word for work-for-hire articles. Hourly rates are converted at 3 hours per 1,000 words, our assumption.

The price, by route

Content writing pricing, route by route

Each bar runs from the cheapest to the most expensive published price we read for this route, normalised to the same spec. The dot is the middle price. The axis is logarithmic: each gridline is ten times the one before.

  • In-house hire

In-house is not sampled. It uses the salary data for AI Content Writer (mid-level median, $84,000 base), loaded at 1.3x and divided by 25 to 40 pieces of 1,000 words a month. Our assumption: 75 to 120 writing hours of a working month of about 173, at the 3 hours per 1,000 words used for every hourly rate on this page. The rest of the month goes to briefs, meetings and revisions. The role page's own figure, 8 to 20 pieces a month, varies by format.

The evidence

Every price we read

112 published prices, each read on the page it links to, in US dollars from a US view. The third column converts each one to the same spec, with the arithmetic. A price that buys something materially different is shown and left out of every range.

    2026-10-12

How the marketplace prices were drawn: Fiverr: search 'article writing' (https://www.fiverr.com/search/gigs?query=article%20writing), default sort, 19,000+ results, read 2026-10-12 in a real Chrome window on a private DevTools port with the cookie logged_out_currency=USD (page currency confirmed USD on every gig). Read listing positions 1 to 39 in order, one gig per seller. Skip rules, stated before reading: multi-article or monthly bulk gigs (positions 1, 9, 22, 26), academic or research-journal articles and citation services (3, 14, 17), publishing or guest-post placement on third-party sites (25, 29, 30), non-English writing (35, 36), and gigs whose title says the article is AI-generated (18 'with jarvis'). That left 26 gigs. For each I confirmed the loaded URL and gig title matched, then read the package table and the gig's own 'Number of words' calculator from the page data, and counted the CHEAPEST single-article route to 1,000 words: a package that includes 1,000 or more words, or a smaller package plus the calculator's extra-word blocks, whichever costs less (ties go to the package). Five gigs were cheapest through the calculator; all five were checked live by setting the calculator to 1,000 words. Revisions and delivery are recorded as published and are not required, because most packages state neither a brief nor revisions in the spec's terms. Fiverr's listing data marks 10 of the 26 as promoted (paid) placements, one as Fiverr's Choice and one as Fiverr Pro; all are kept and flagged, because a buyer sees them. Upwork Project Catalog: search 'article writing' (https://www.upwork.com/services/search?q=article%20writing), default sort, 43,904 projects available, read the same day the same way. Took the first 23 listing URLs in result order (the 24th was a Spanish translation service, out of scope) and opened each; one was excluded because its tiers state no word count (position 13, Delwar H.). For the other 22, counted the cheapest route to 1,000 words: the lowest tier of 1,000 or more words, or a smaller tier plus the listing's own 'Additional 100 Words' add-on where that is cheaper. Prices exclude both marketplaces' buyer fees. Contra was tried and is not sampled (see gaps).

Checked, and publish no price

Not a criticism. Quoting per project is normal when the work varies. It does mean the ranges above describe the providers who publish, and the ones who do not are rarely the cheapest.

What moves the price

Why one 1,000-word piece costs 98 times another

The star level, graded on grammar and style rather than expertise, sets the per-word rate.

  1. 01

Each star costs more than the last

Textbroker's rate rises 0.9 cents a word from three stars to four, then 5.8 cents from four to five. Content Development Pros prices one 1,000-word article at $35, $65 and $85 across the same three levels; Writoholics' ten-packs work out at $34, $46 and $74 a piece.

    Textbroker OpenOrder rates
  2. 02

    The spread inside one level

WriterAccess prices its six-star writers from 10 cents to $2.00 a word, 'depending on the complexity, visibility, and skills required for success'. That is $100 to $2,000 for the same 1,000 words, a twentyfold range at a single level.

    WriterAccess star levels
  3. 03

    Human-written or AI-assisted

The same sellers now price both. Writoholics' AI-assisted, editor-reviewed tier is $20 per 1,000-word blog against $34 to $74 for its human writers; Content Development Pros' AI package works out at about $8.33 per 1,000 words against $35 for its cheapest human writer.

    Writoholics packages
  4. 04

    Urgent delivery

Content Development Pros' order calculator doubles the per-word rate for urgent delivery at every star level, so its $65 four-star article would cost $130 in a hurry. Its standard 1,000-word package promises delivery within seven business days.

    Content Development Pros article pricing
  5. 05

    Handing over the management

A managed service changes the minimum more than the rate. Stellar's managed tiers start at 15 and 18 cents a word against 13 for self-serve, while Textbroker's Managed Service needs a $2,500 order and Verblio's needs 50 articles a month.

    Stellar pricing
  6. 06

    Word bands and minimums

Per-piece prices hide a band. okwrite charges $95 for 600 to 1,000 words and $150 for 1,000 to 1,400, so one word over costs $55. WordAgents' 8 cents a word comes with a 5,000-word minimum, $400, and Zenith Copy's $985 buys at least 1,500 words.

Building it with AI

What the machine costs, and what it does not

Nine current models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google would write 1,000 words for under a cent to 90 cents of compute, on our token estimate. Subscription tools charge by the month instead: Writesonic's Starter plan is $79 for 15 AI articles, about $5.27 each. The receipt prices one mid-range model, then the hours that make the draft usable.

What AI cannot do here
  • Know which questions your buyers ask before they call
  • Tell a true claim from a plausible one without a source to check
  • Write in your voice without examples of it

The hourly rate is the same loaded in-house figure used for the in-house route, so the two are comparable.

What a 1,000-word piece takes to do yourself

Orbit Media's 2026 survey of 1,042 content marketers puts the average post at 1,312 words and 3 hours 20 minutes, about 2.5 hours per 1,000 words. Fiverr's own cost guide says 2 to 4 hours for 800 to 1,000 words on a general topic.

Agency vs freelancer vs fractional vs in-house

Cost is one row of six. I sell writing only inside an engagement, made through people I manage, so the fractional column loses the rows about buying words cheaply and one piece at a time.

01

One page, two hourly ranges

Upwork's content writer cost page heads with '$15–$40/hr', its median hourly rates. The same page's body says rates run 'as high as $80, though most fall in the $30-50 range'. A quote can cite Upwork for either, so ask which figure it rests on.

A 2026 title over 2020 income

Peak Freelance's rates report is titled 2026 and dated 6 November 2025, but its income question asks about 'annual freelance income for 2020'. Its $250 to $399 for a 1,500-word post, the most popular answer among 213 writers, is still repeated by other ranking pages as current.

An average with no method

EarnifyHub reports a $0.42-a-word average from '500 active freelance writers' and publishes no method, questionnaire or recruitment. ruul.io, the top result for freelance writer cost, cites the figure beside the EFA's chart, and bestwriting.com repeats it as a survey finding.

04

A monthly fee before the first word

WriterAccess's flat rate is $50 for 1,000 words, plus $49 a month for the platform, so a single piece in a month costs $99. Verblio's AI-assisted tier adds $49.50 a month 'after your first week', and Textbroker adds $0.50 to every order.

The package is not your word count

Fiverr cards show the base package, and a gig's 'Number of words' calculator changes the total: one listing showing $10 for 500 words came to $25 at 1,000. Another sells a package titled 'I will write a 1000 SEO Article' whose own word-count field says 50.

Rate pages older than they look

Three of the four independent writers we could count last changed their rate pages in 2020, 2022 and 2023. The fourth is dated July 2026 and still says 'it's 2024'. Treat a published rate as a starting point and ask for the current one in writing.

The cost of doing nothing

What not having it costs, in your numbers rather than ours

Not buying the writing rarely means nothing gets written. It means someone else writes it, later, between other work. Here is where that shows up, and a sum you can do from your own calendar.

  • Your expert becomes the writer

Without a writer, drafting falls to whoever knows the subject, usually a founder or a specialist. Every piece then competes with that person's main job for the same hours, and the main job usually wins.

  • Bursts read as a dormant company

Pieces written when someone finds a spare week arrive in clumps with months between them. A buyer who checks the dates sees the gap, and an out-of-date blog reads as a company that has stopped.

  • The question goes to another page

A page that is never written cannot rank or be quoted in an AI answer. The query is answered by a competitor's page instead, and that page collects the links and citations yours would have.

How I price it

Why there is no per-piece price from me

busyless runs on a retainer. A Fractional Head of Content, from $5,000 a month and month to month, owns the system: which channels we bet on, the editorial standard, customer interviews, the conversion path and the monthly report.

Production sits underneath as execution capacity, from $2,000 a month, through agents I have built or people I manage. We make as much as growth needs, so a price per piece would measure the count rather than whether it worked.

Most clients start with Discovery: two weeks and $2,500 for the diagnosis and a 90-day plan, theirs to keep either way.

30 minutes. We talk about what's already working, who owns content today, and whether a fractional Head of Content is actually the right move. If it isn't, I'll say so.

FAQ

Frequently asked

  • Why can 1,000 words of content writing be $10 or $985?
Because you are buying a rate card, not a piece. Across the 66 seller prices we compared, the same 1,000 words ran from $10 on Fiverr to $985 from an independent writer whose minimum order is 1,500 words. The star level, who writes the brief, urgency, minimums and word bands all move the price before the writing does.
  • Is a higher star level worth paying for in content writing?
Only for cleaner copy. Textbroker says its stars rate spelling, grammar and style and that it does not evaluate an author's expertise, yet its five-star rate is 2.8 times its four-star one. WriterAccess's six-star level alone spans 10 cents to $2.00 a word. Read a writer's published work in your field before paying for the top level.
  • Can AI replace a writer for 1,000 words of content writing?
It can produce the words: about 18 cents of model time on our token estimate, and under a cent on the cheapest models. Making them publishable, by briefing the model, checking every claim and rewriting for voice, takes one to two hours on our estimate, $53 to $105 at an in-house writer's loaded rate. That is more than the middle marketplace price of $35.
  • Should content writing be bought per word, per piece or per hour?
Per word is the easiest to compare, and most platforms and agencies here use it. Per piece hides a band: okwrite's $95 covers 600 to 1,000 words and the next band is $150. Per hour is the hardest, because few sellers say how long a piece takes; this page converts hourly rates at 3 hours per 1,000 words, our assumption.
  • For content writing, which survey of freelance writer rates should you trust?
The one that publishes its method and its date. The EFA's 2026 chart, from its members' 2025 work, gives a median range of 25 to 45 cents a word for work-for-hire articles. The middle of Jack Limebear's 350 writers, mostly in tech and B2B, charges 5 to 10 cents. Peak Freelance's band comes from a survey that asked about 2020 income, and EarnifyHub's $0.42 has no published method.
  • How many hours does a writer spend on 1,000 words of content writing?
About two and a half to four. Orbit Media's 2026 survey puts the average post at 1,312 words in 3 hours 20 minutes, Fiverr's own guide says 2 to 4 hours for 800 to 1,000 words, and the EFA's pace for articles works out at 1.3 to 4 hours of writing alone. Paid turnaround is longer: from one day on a marketplace to seven business days at an agency.
  • Is a salaried writer cheaper than content writing bought by the word?
Rarely, on price alone. A mid-level AI content writer's median salary, loaded for payroll and benefits, comes to $9,100 a month. At 25 to 40 pieces of 1,000 words, that is $228 to $364 each, above the middle agency price of $95. A hire earns its cost through knowledge of the product and its customers, not through a cheaper word.
  • Does busyless sell content writing at a word rate?
No. Writing is part of production, from $2,000 a month, bought on top of a fractional Head of Content from $5,000 a month who decides what gets written and whether it worked. There is no per-word or per-piece price. If you only need words to a brief you have already written, the routes on this page are the way to buy them.
