Best for pay-as-you-go volume

DataForSEO sells raw search data by the request. There is no seat licence, no monthly minimum and no dashboard to speak of. You top up a balance, send a POST, and get structured JSON back. That single design decision is why it sits underneath a large share of the SEO tools you already pay for, and why it is the provider most teams end up on once they outgrow a per-seat plan.

The catalogue runs to twelve separate APIs: SERP, Keywords Data, Backlinks, DataForSEO Labs, On-Page, Domain Analytics, Business Data, Reviews, Merchant, App Data, Content Analysis and AI Optimization. They share one account, one auth scheme and one balance, but they are priced independently, which is the part that catches people out. A workload that looks cheap on the SERP rate card can get expensive fast once Labs and Backlinks calls are in the mix.

What you are buying is coverage and unit economics, not interpretation. DataForSEO gives you the same rows Ahrefs and Semrush would show you, minus the clustering, the scoring and the opinion. If your team has someone who can write the query and read the response, that trade is usually worth it. If it does not, the saving is theoretical.

Our scorecard

Our editorial read across six dimensions, scored 1 to 5. This is our own assessment, not an aggregate of user reviews, and it is deliberately kept out of the page's structured data.

  • Data coverage5/5

Twelve APIs spanning SERP, keywords, links, on-page and AI search. Nothing else here is this broad.

  • Pricing5/5

Cheapest per-request rates of any full-stack provider, with no subscription floor.

  • Documentation5/5

Every endpoint documented with live request examples you can fire from the docs page.

  • Ease of integration4/5

Basic auth and plain JSON, but the task/callback model takes a while to internalise.

  • Reliability4/5

Consistent at volume. The queue modes mean you trade latency for cost rather than dropping requests.

  • Support4/5

24/7 support is genuinely responsive, though reviewers are split on depth.

Who DataForSEO is for

DataForSEO suits any team that has a developer and a real volume problem. Agencies reporting on hundreds of client keywords, SaaS products that need SEO data behind their own UI, and in-house teams building pipelines into a warehouse all land here for the same reason: the per-request price makes workloads viable that a per-seat tool would price out of existence. It is a poor fit for a solo SEO who wants to look something up once a week, because you are buying plumbing, not a product.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • The broadest catalogue here. Twelve APIs cover SERPs, keywords, links, technical crawl, local, marketplace and AI search from one account and one balance.
  • Genuinely pay as you go. No seat licence and no monthly minimum, so a quiet month costs almost nothing and a heavy month scales linearly.
  • Documentation you can actually fire requests from. Every endpoint has a live example, which shortens integration from days to hours.
  • Three speed tiers on the same data, so you can pay for latency only where a human is waiting on it.
  • An official MCP server, which makes it one of the few providers you can point Claude or another AI client at directly.
  • Keyword volumes come from the Google Ads API rather than a modelled estimate, which is why they tend to line up with what advertisers see.

Where it falls short

  • It is raw data and nothing else. There is no clustering, no intent mapping and no scoring, so budget for the interpretation layer you are no longer buying.
  • Twelve independently priced APIs make forecasting harder than a flat subscription. Model your actual workload before comparing rate cards.
  • The dashboard is dated and the account UI is the weakest part of the product, a point reviewers raise consistently.
  • Backlink depth and historical data are the datasets where Ahrefs and Semrush still hold an edge, because they fund their own large-scale crawlers.
  • Used as a dedicated rank tracker at high keyword counts, the per-SERP cost adds up and the economics get closer to a purpose-built tracker than you would expect.

DataForSEO pricing

DataForSEO bills per request, per API, with no subscription underneath. SERPs start at $0.0006 on the Standard queue, rising to $0.0012 for Priority and $0.002 for Live. Keyword data is $0.06 for a Standard task carrying up to 1,000 keywords, which works out at about $60 per million keywords, or $0.09 per task in Live mode. Backlinks are $0.024 per request plus $0.000036 per row returned, and DataForSEO Labs costs $0.012 per task plus $0.00012 per item.

That two-part structure, a fixed task price plus a per-row increment, is the thing to model. A Labs call returning 1,000 items costs $0.132, not $0.012. Optional SERP parameters also apply multipliers, so an advanced request with extra features is not the headline rate. The minimum top-up is $50 and the balance does not expire, which means a quiet month genuinely costs nothing.

Standard queue

$0.0006 / SERP

Around 5 minutes to return

  • Cheapest way to pull SERPs at volume
  • Right default for nightly rank tracking and bulk research
  • Results collected by callback or by polling the task id
  • Same data as Live mode, just queued

Priority queue

$0.0012 / SERP

Around 1 minute to return

  • Double the Standard rate for a faster place in the queue
  • Useful when a report is waiting on the result
  • Still asynchronous, so you need callback handling
  • Sensible middle ground for client-facing dashboards

Live mode

$0.002 / SERP

Around 6 seconds to return

  • Synchronous: one request, one response, no polling
  • More than 3x the Standard rate
  • The only sane option behind an interactive UI
  • Reserve it for user-triggered lookups, not batch jobs

Request example

A minimal call against the live endpoint, with credentials read from the environment rather than pasted inline.

Pull a live Google SERP · bash
curl -X POST "https://api.dataforseo.com/v3/serp/google/organic/live/advanced" \
  -u "$DFS_LOGIN:$DFS_PASSWORD" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '[{
        "keyword": "seo apis",
        "location_code": 2840,
        "language_code": "en",
        "depth": 20
      }]'

Rate limits and quotas

  • Minimum top-up is $50. There is no monthly commitment beyond that.
  • Standard queue returns in roughly 5 minutes, Priority in roughly 1 minute, Live in roughly 6 seconds.
  • Queued tasks are collected either by callback (pingback/postback) or by polling the returned task id.
  • Optional SERP parameters apply a cost multiplier, so an advanced request is not the base rate.
  • A free sandbox mirrors the request and response shape without charging the balance. Build against it first.

What practitioners say on Reddit

MixedOur read of public threads, not a review score.

Practitioners are consistently positive about the price and the documentation, and consistently clear that it is not a finished product. The recurring pattern in r/TechSEO and r/SEO is a team replacing one expensive subscription with a thin internal tool built on DataForSEO, reporting a bill in the single-digit dollars for what a SaaS plan charged hundreds for. The pushback is equally consistent: the data is raw, backlink and historical coverage are where the incumbents still win, and anyone without development capacity will spend more, not less.

  • I use DataForSeo at our agency religiously. We needed to report past the 2nd page for our clients and all the SaaS tools were charging an arm and a leg.
    r/TechSEO on Reddit
  • It's good, but unless you're a developer, you'll likely end up spending more than with the other tools you mentioned. Even worse, you might not find it useful at all. It's raw data, nothing else.
    r/SEO on Reddit
  • DataForSEO gives raw data. Ahrefs/Semrush win on interpretation + workflow. If your tool adds clustering, intent mapping, competitor gaps, and clean exports then it's valuable. If it's just a UI wrapper, most SEOs won't switch.
    r/TechSEO on Reddit
  • I'm not against DataforSEO however the reason SemRush and Ahrefs are so valuable is because they spend a ton of money on infrastructure so they can crawl the web extensively. It's not the features that are complicated, it's the quality of the data.
    r/TechSEO on Reddit
  • Honestly with dataforseo they have super open documentation, really easy to connect that to my ai and have it create something that will get the job done.

Verdict

If you have a developer and a volume problem, DataForSEO is the default answer and has been for a while. Nothing else combines this breadth with per-request billing and no floor, which is why so much of the tooling market quietly runs on it. Go in understanding what you are buying: rows, not conclusions. Budget for the layer that turns those rows into something a client can read, model your real workload against the two-part pricing before you compare rate cards, and keep Ahrefs or Semrush around if deep backlink history is central to your work.

DataForSEO FAQ

  • How much does the DataForSEO API cost?
There is no subscription. SERPs start at $0.0006 each on the Standard queue, $0.0012 on Priority and $0.002 in Live mode. Keyword data is $0.06 per task of up to 1,000 keywords, backlinks are $0.024 per request plus $0.000036 per row, and Labs endpoints are $0.012 per task plus $0.00012 per item. The minimum account top-up is $50.
  • Is there a free trial?
Yes. New accounts get a small trial credit, and there is a free sandbox that mirrors the exact request and response shape of the live endpoints without charging your balance. Building against the sandbox first is the fastest way to get an integration right.
  • How do you authenticate with DataForSEO?
Basic auth. You send an Authorization header containing your login and API password Base64-encoded as login:password. The API password is generated by DataForSEO and is different from your account password. Credentials cannot be passed as URL parameters, and there is no separate token exchange step.
  • What is the difference between Standard, Priority and Live?
They return the same data at different speeds and prices. Standard queues the task and takes about five minutes. Priority costs double and takes about a minute. Live is synchronous, returns in about six seconds, and costs more than three times Standard. Use Standard for batch jobs and Live only where someone is waiting on the response.
  • Is DataForSEO accurate compared to Ahrefs and Semrush?
For SERP and keyword data it is comparable, partly because volume figures come from the Google Ads API rather than a proprietary model. Backlinks and historical data are where Ahrefs and Semrush still lead, since both fund large-scale crawlers of their own. Practitioners tend to use DataForSEO for SERP, keyword and rank data and keep a subscription tool for deep link analysis.
  • Can I resell DataForSEO data in my own product?
Building a commercial product on top of DataForSEO is an expected use case, which is a real difference from some subscription APIs whose terms prohibit repackaging their data. Read the current terms before you ship, but this is the provider a large share of SEO tools are built on.
  • Does DataForSEO work with AI tools like Claude?
Yes. DataForSEO ships an official Model Context Protocol server, so you can connect it to Claude or another MCP client and query the data conversationally. It also has community nodes in n8n, which is the more common route for scheduled automations.
  • Is DataForSEO good for rank tracking?
It works, and it is why many agencies build their own trackers on it, particularly when they need rankings past page two that packaged tools charge heavily for. Be aware that at high keyword counts the per-SERP cost compounds daily, and the total can approach what a purpose-built tracker charges. Model it at your real keyword count before committing.
