What social is actually for at your company

A Social Media Marketing Manager owns how a brand shows up on social platforms: what gets published, how the brand behaves in conversation, and what any of it is supposed to achieve. That last part is where most of these hires go wrong.

Social is the marketing function most often staffed without a clear objective. The role gets opened because competitors post and the company does not, the new hire inherits a follower count as their only visible metric, and eighteen months later somebody asks what it produced and there is no good answer. That is a briefing failure, not a hiring failure, and it is avoidable.

This page covers what the role should own, three templates you can post as-is, salary by seniority, and the goal conversation worth having internally before you write the ad.

What does a Social Media Marketing Manager do?

The core is producing content native to each platform. This is the part that is consistently underestimated: what works on LinkedIn does not work on TikTok, and cross-posting the same asset everywhere reliably underperforms on every channel simultaneously. Real platform fluency is a craft skill, not a scheduling task.

The second part is the conversation. Replying, engaging with other people's posts, participating in communities and handling the occasional complaint that arrives publicly at an inconvenient moment. Brands that only broadcast get treated as broadcasts and their reach reflects it.

The third is the part most job ads omit: knowing what social is for at this company. Awareness, demand, recruitment, community, customer support deflection, or founder-led credibility. These require genuinely different content and different measurement, and trying to serve all of them at once produces a feed that serves none.

The fourth is measurement, which is unavoidably imperfect. Social influences buying decisions in ways that attribution models capture badly, particularly in B2B where the buyer sees a post, remembers the company, and searches for it three weeks later. A manager who cannot make a credible case despite that gap will lose their budget to channels that report more cleanly.

Social Media Marketing Manager duties and responsibilities

Assumes the objective has been agreed. If it has not, that conversation comes before the job ad.

  • 01Own the social strategy and know, in a sentence, what social is for at this company.
  • 02Produce platform-native content rather than cross-posting one asset everywhere.
  • 03Run the publishing calendar across the channels that genuinely matter, and drop the ones that do not.
  • 04Engage: reply, participate in relevant conversations and build relationships rather than only broadcasting.
  • 05Own community management, including the escalation path for complaints that arrive publicly.
  • 06Work with content and design to repurpose existing work into platform-native formats.
  • 07Support founder or executive social presence, which frequently outperforms the brand account.
  • 08Manage creator and influencer relationships where they fit the strategy.
  • 09Run paid amplification of organic content that is already working.
  • 10Report honestly on what social contributes, including where attribution genuinely cannot prove it.

For a B2B company where social is mostly LinkedIn, and where founder and employee presence usually beats the brand account.

Social Media Marketing Manager

[COMPANY] sells [PRODUCT] to [AUDIENCE]. We are hiring a Social Media Marketing Manager to own how we show up where our buyers spend their attention.

What social is for here, stated up front

[BE SPECIFIC: building credibility with [AUDIENCE] so that when they enter a buying cycle we are already a candidate. Not follower growth. Not reach.]

We are stating this because most social roles are hired without it, and both sides end up disappointed. You will be measured on [METRIC], with [SECONDARY METRICS] as leading indicators.

You will report to [MANAGER] and work with [CONTENT / DESIGN / DEMAND GEN].

What you will do

- Own social strategy across [CHANNELS], and tell us which we should stop using
- Produce platform-native content. LinkedIn is not a repost channel
- Run the publishing cadence and keep it
- Engage genuinely: reply, participate, build relationships in [COMMUNITIES]
- Support [FOUNDER / EXECUTIVES] on personal presence, which usually outperforms brand accounts in B2B
- Enable employee advocacy without making it feel mandatory
- Repurpose our long-form content into platform-native formats
- Run paid amplification behind organic posts that are already working
- Manage community and the escalation path when something goes wrong publicly
- Report honestly, including where attribution cannot prove contribution

What we are looking for

- [3 to 6] years in social, ideally B2B
- Can show accounts you grew and explain what actually drove it
- Strong writing. In B2B social, the writing is the content
- Comfortable ghostwriting for executives and capturing their voice
- Pragmatic about measurement: neither claiming false attribution nor refusing to be measured

Nice to have

- [CATEGORY] experience
- Video production or editing
- Community building experience
- Paid social buying

Social Media Marketing Manager skills and qualifications

Screen for craft and judgment. Follower counts are the least informative thing on a social CV.

Platform-native production
Makes content that belongs on each platform rather than adapting one asset for all of them. This is the craft, and cross-posting is the most common reason social underperforms.
Writing
In B2B especially, the writing is the content. A manager who can only commission and schedule is missing the primary skill.
Ghostwriting
Captures a founder or executive's voice convincingly. Personal accounts routinely outperform brand accounts, and this skill unlocks that.
Community judgment
Knows when to reply, when to escalate and when to say nothing. One bad public exchange travels further than a hundred good posts.
Cultural timing
Recognizes which moments the brand can credibly join and which it cannot. The judgment to stay out is worth more than the ability to join in.
Repurposing
Turns long-form work into platform-native formats efficiently. The highest-leverage habit in the role and the one most often skipped under deadline.
Creator management
Briefs creators well, negotiates fairly, and knows when a partnership will read as inauthentic to the audience.
Honest measurement
Reports what social contributes without claiming attribution it cannot support, and without hiding behind reach. This determines whether the budget survives.
Knowing what to abandon
Will recommend leaving a platform that is not working. Managers who maintain six channels because the brand has always been on six are spending your money on presence rather than results.

Social Media Marketing Manager experience requirements

Three to six years. Read the portfolio carefully: growing an account for a brand people already love is a different achievement from growing one for a company nobody has heard of, and CVs rarely distinguish them.

Ask what drove the growth they claim. Strong candidates can name the specific change: a format that worked, a shift to founder-led posting, a decision to abandon a channel. Weak ones describe consistency and quality, which are true of everybody and explain nothing.

B2B and consumer social are genuinely different disciplines. B2B rewards writing, credibility and executive presence. Consumer rewards visual craft, speed and cultural fluency. Candidates rarely excel at both and hiring across the gap is a common and expensive mistake.

Ask about a mistake they made publicly. Everybody who has run a brand account has posted something that landed badly. How they handled it tells you what you need to know about judgment under pressure, which is the risk this role actually carries.

Social Media Marketing Manager education and training requirements

No degree requirement, and this is a discipline where formal education is particularly weakly correlated with capability. Some of the strongest practitioners built their own audience first and learned everything by doing it in public.

Platform certifications are worth close to nothing. Ask instead for three posts they wrote and why each worked. Ten minutes of that reveals more than any credential, and it also surfaces whether they understand their own results.

What the hire actually costs

Senior-level median at a 1.3× loaded multiplier

$127,400/yr

Base salary plus payroll taxes, benefits, software seats, hardware and amortized recruiting cost. It does not include the ramp period before the hire is productive.

Base salary only, United States, July 2026. Blended from Indeed, Glassdoor, Payscale, ZipRecruiter and Salary.com reported ranges, then adjusted down to exclude bonus and equity, which several of those sources fold into total pay. Treat these as a budgeting starting point, not a benchmark. New York and San Francisco run 15 to 25 percent above these figures. Fully remote roles hiring outside major metros run 10 to 20 percent below.

Full-time hire or fractional? Where the line falls

Social has a real limitation for outside operators and it is worth naming plainly. Strategy, production, repurposing and executive ghostwriting all transfer well. Real-time community response, same-day cultural reaction and capturing internal moments do not, because they require being inside the company's daily conversation. How much of your social value sits in that second group determines the answer.

Full-time hire

Social Media Marketing Manager, senior band

$127,400/yr

$98,000 base at a 1.3× loaded multiplier

  • 4 to 8 weeks to hire, from a large but uneven candidate pool
  • Can respond in real time and capture internal moments. This is the real advantage
  • Only works if somebody has decided what social is actually for
  • Creator, paid amplification and production budget sit on top

Fractional with busyless

Retainer, month to month

$60,000/yr

From $5,000/mo, no payroll tax, no benefits, no tooling bill

  • Strategy, channel audit and production against a plan
  • Repurposing your long-form work into platform-native formats, which is the highest-leverage habit
  • Founder and executive ghostwriting, which transfers well from outside
  • A documented playbook, so an internal hire inherits a system
  • Cannot do real-time community response or same-day reaction. That needs somebody inside

Work out what social is for

How to hire a Social Media Marketing Manager

  1. 01

Decide what social is for before you write the ad

Awareness, demand, recruitment, community, support deflection or founder credibility. These need different content and different measurement. Hiring without picking is why so many social roles end up measured on followers and quietly cut two years later.

  2. 02

Do not measure them on follower count

It is the easiest metric to influence and the least connected to outcomes. Pick something closer to the objective: qualified inbound mentions, branded search lift, community growth, application volume. Whatever you choose, agree it before they start.

  3. 03

Match the discipline to your market

B2B social rewards writing and executive presence. Consumer rewards visual craft and speed. Candidates rarely excel at both, and hiring a brilliant consumer social manager into a B2B role is a common and expensive mismatch.

  4. 04

Ask what drove the growth they claim

Strong candidates name a specific change: a format, a shift to founder-led posting, abandoning a channel. Answers about consistency and quality are true of everyone and explain nothing about what they personally did.

  5. 05

    Talk about founder presence explicitly

In B2B, executive accounts routinely outperform brand accounts by a wide margin. If your founders will not participate, say so in the ad, because it materially changes what is achievable and good candidates will ask.

Interview questions for Social Media Marketing Managers

  • What do you think social should be for at our company?

Listen for A specific view based on our business and audience, with an acknowledgment of what they would need to confirm. Candidates who describe a generic full-funnel presence have not thought about us.

  • Show me three posts you wrote that worked. Why did they?

Listen for Specific reasons: the hook, the format, the timing, the audience insight. Vague answers about resonance mean they do not understand their own results and will not be able to repeat them.

  • Which of our channels would you stop using?

Listen for A willingness to recommend abandoning something, with reasoning about audience and effort. Managers who maintain every channel are spending your money on presence rather than results.

  • A customer posts a serious complaint publicly on a Friday evening. Walk me through it.

Listen for Acknowledge fast, move to private, escalate internally, follow up publicly once resolved. Candidates who would delete it or argue in the replies are a genuine liability.

  • How would you get our founder posting consistently?

Listen for A low-friction system: short interviews, ghostwritten drafts for approval, capturing their actual opinions rather than producing corporate copy. Anyone who says they would just ask the founder to write has not done this.

  • How do you prove social is working when attribution cannot see it?

Listen for Leading indicators, branded search lift, self-reported attribution, sales anecdotes treated as signal rather than proof. Both overclaiming and refusing measurement are wrong answers.

Social Media Marketing Manager FAQs

  • What does a Social Media Marketing Manager actually do?
They own strategy, content production, community management and measurement across social platforms. In practice the balance depends entirely on what social is for at your company, which is why that decision belongs before the job ad rather than after the hire.
  • How much does a Social Media Marketing Manager cost in 2026?
In the US, roughly $63,000 to $90,000 base at mid level and $85,000 to $118,000 at senior. Add about 30 percent for the fully loaded cost, plus creator, paid amplification and production budget, which for consumer brands is frequently larger than the salary.
  • What should a social media manager be measured on?
Whatever social is for at your company, and not follower count, which is the easiest metric to influence and the least connected to outcomes. For B2B, qualified inbound mentions and branded search lift work well. For consumer, community growth and traceable revenue.
  • Should the founder be posting instead of the brand account?
In B2B, usually both, with the founder account carrying more weight. Personal accounts consistently get more reach and more trust. The most effective arrangement is a social manager who ghostwrites for executives while running the brand account, and the ad should say so.
  • Do I need one social manager per platform?
Rarely. What you need is to be genuinely good on fewer platforms rather than present on many. One capable manager can run two or three channels well. Six channels maintained thinly performs worse than two done properly, and costs more attention.
  • Should social sit under brand, content or growth?
Wherever the objective sits. If social is for awareness and brand, under brand. If it is for pipeline, under growth or demand generation. The failure mode is placing it under one and measuring it against the other's goals, which is remarkably common.
  • Can social media management be outsourced?
Strategy, production, repurposing and executive ghostwriting transfer well. Real-time community response and same-day cultural reaction do not, because they need somebody inside the company's daily conversation. Many companies split it: outside production, internal community response.
  • How long before social shows results?
One to two quarters for engagement and audience quality to shift, longer for anything downstream. Social compounds slowly and unevenly, and a single post can outperform a quarter of consistent work. Judge the system over quarters rather than the posts over weeks.
