Similarweb API review

Best competitor traffic data

Reviewed by Eugene SuslovUpdated August 2026No affiliate links

Similarweb estimates how much traffic a website gets, where it comes from and who the audience is, across effectively the whole web. No competitor matches the breadth, and it is the dataset most market analysis and competitive intelligence work ends up standing on.

It is also the most expensive thing in this directory by a wide margin. The Web Intelligence API is only available on the Business tier and above, which runs around $35,000 a year, and larger deployments go well into six figures. The self-service plans that start at $125 a month do not include API access at all.

Who Similarweb API is for

Enterprise teams doing market sizing, competitive intelligence or investment research where traffic estimates justify real decisions. For SEO work specifically, it is usually more than the job requires.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • Unmatched breadth. Traffic estimates for essentially any domain, not just the ones a competitor happens to track.
  • Goes well beyond visits into traffic sources, audience overlap, demographics and app data.
  • Industry and market-level benchmarking that no SEO-specific provider offers.
  • The de facto standard in market research, so its numbers carry weight in a boardroom.

Where it falls short

  • Enterprise pricing only. Around $35,000 a year is the entry point for API access, with no self-service route.
  • Traffic figures are modelled from panel and clickstream data, so accuracy degrades sharply for smaller sites.
  • Broad rather than SEO-specific. No SERP data, no keyword-level rankings, no backlinks.

Similarweb API pricing

The Web Intelligence API sits on the Business tier and above, at roughly $35,000 a year. Deployments with more users and modules run from $90,000 to $200,000 a year and beyond. Self-service plans from $125 a month on annual billing do not include API access.

There is no way to buy a small amount of this data programmatically. If the budget is not already there, Semrush Trends is the closest affordable substitute for competitor traffic estimates.

Verdict

The best competitor traffic data available and priced to match. Justifiable when traffic estimates drive investment or market-entry decisions, hard to justify for SEO reporting alone. If you need directional competitor traffic on an SEO budget, Semrush Trends or SpyFu will get you most of the way for a fraction of the cost.

Similarweb API FAQ

  • How much does the Similarweb API cost?
The Web Intelligence API requires the Business tier, around $35,000 a year. Larger deployments run $90,000 to $200,000 a year or more. The $125-a-month self-service plans do not include API access.
  • Is there a cheaper alternative to Similarweb for traffic data?
Semrush Trends is the closest affordable substitute, and SpyFu offers directional competitor data far cheaper. Neither matches Similarweb's breadth, but both are enough for most SEO reporting.
  • How accurate are Similarweb traffic estimates?
Good for large sites and progressively less reliable as traffic falls, because the figures are modelled from panel and clickstream data. Treat them as directional comparisons between competitors rather than true visitor counts, especially below a few thousand visits a month.
  • Does Similarweb provide SEO-specific data?
Only partly. It covers traffic sources including organic search share, but there is no SERP data, no keyword-level ranking and no backlink index. It complements an SEO API rather than replacing one.
  • Can I get Similarweb data without an enterprise contract?
Not programmatically. The self-service plans give interface access only, so API use means a Business-tier contract and a sales conversation.
