Best for your own AWS account

Webiny takes an unusual position: it is open source, but rather than running as a container you manage, it deploys into your own AWS account as serverless infrastructure. Lambda, DynamoDB and either Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, all provisioned by its own CLI.

That gives you data residency and infrastructure ownership without the operational burden of running servers, plus multi-tenancy, a page builder and a form builder alongside the headless CMS.

Who Webiny is for

Organisations with a data-residency or infrastructure-ownership requirement that also want serverless economics, and agencies running many tenants from one deployment.

A poor fit if you are not on AWS or do not want to be.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • Runs in your AWS account, so data residency and compliance questions have straightforward answers.
  • Serverless by design means cost scales with use rather than with provisioned capacity.
  • Multi-tenancy is a core feature rather than a plugin, which is rare in open-source CMS tools.
  • The MIT core is a complete CMS; only enterprise/ directories carry a separate licence.

Where it falls short

  • AWS only. There is no path to Azure, GCP or a plain VPS, which rules it out for many teams outright.
  • The infrastructure surface is large for a CMS, and debugging spans Lambda, DynamoDB and a search cluster.
  • Smaller community than Strapi or Payload, so fewer worked examples when something goes wrong.
  • Business pricing is quoted as a starting price of $79 a month rather than a full rate card.

The Community edition is free forever and self-hosted in your own AWS account; you pay AWS for what you use. Business starts at $79 a month billed monthly. Enterprise is quote-only on an annual basis and adds team management, single sign-on, audit logs and priority support.

Verdict

The clearest answer here for "open source, but it has to run in our own cloud, and we do not want to run servers". Nothing else in this directory occupies that exact position.

The AWS-only constraint is absolute, and the operational surface is genuinely larger than a container-based CMS. Go in knowing you are adopting an infrastructure pattern, not just a CMS.
