CloudCannon puts a visual editing layer over a static site generator, committing every change back to git. Unlike most git-based tools it edits the built site rather than a form, so editors click on the page itself.
It supports Astro, Eleventy, Hugo, Jekyll and others, and unlimited sites on every plan makes it a natural fit for agencies with a portfolio of static builds.
Who CloudCannon is for
Agencies and teams running many static sites who want clients to edit visually without touching git.
Not suitable if you want a content API for a decoupled app; this is an editing layer over a static build.
Strengths and limits
What it does well
- Visual editing over the actual built page, which is a much better handover experience than a Markdown form.
- Unlimited sites on every plan, so portfolio economics work in your favour rather than against.
- Works with the static site generators people actually use rather than requiring a specific framework.
- Content stays in git, so there is no vendor content store to migrate out of.
Where it falls short
- No free tier at all, only a 21-day trial, which is unusual in this category.
- Seats are tight and metered: 3 on Standard, 15 on Team, then $10 a month each.
- It is an editing layer, not a content API, so it does not replace a headless CMS for an application.
- Bandwidth and custom domains are separately priced add-ons.
CloudCannon pricing
Standard is $55 a month, or $49 billed annually, with unlimited sites and 3 users. Team is $350 a month, or $300 annually, with unlimited sites and 15 users. Enterprise is custom. A partner-only Lite plan exists at $10 a month.
Add-ons: extra users at $10 a month each, 100GB of bandwidth at $15 a month and custom domains at $2 each. Every plan comes with a 21-day trial and there is no free tier.
Verdict
The best visual editing experience available on top of a static site generator, and unlimited sites makes it a sensible agency standard.
Be clear about what it is not: an API-first CMS. If a mobile app or a separate front end needs the same content, this is the wrong layer.
