ButterCMS is aimed squarely at the case where an application already exists and someone needs a blog and a handful of marketing pages on it without a rebuild. The blog engine is opinionated and complete, and the SDK coverage across languages is broader than most competitors here.

Its most distinctive pricing decision is unlimited users on every plan, including free. Where most of this directory bills per seat, Butter bills on content volume and API calls.

Who ButterCMS is for

SaaS and product teams adding a blog and marketing pages to an existing app, especially when the stack is not JavaScript.

Not the right tool for a content-led site with a complex model, since page and post counts are metered per tier.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • Unlimited users on every plan, which makes it unusually cheap for a large team compared with per-seat competitors.
  • SDKs cover a wide range of languages, so it fits Rails, Django, Laravel and .NET apps as easily as Next.js.
  • The blog engine is complete out of the box: categories, tags, authors, RSS and SEO fields.
  • A free tier that can carry a real small blog rather than only a demo.

Where it falls short

  • Page and post counts are capped per tier, at 5 pages and 50 posts on Free and 20 pages and 100 posts on the $71 Basic plan, which is restrictive for a growing content programme.
  • Basic at $71 a month is a high entry price for what is fundamentally a blog engine.
  • Localisation only appears at the $359 Professional tier, with 3 locales included.
  • Content modelling is shallower than the structured-content platforms here.

Free is $0 with unlimited users, 50,000 API calls a month, 100GB of bandwidth, 5 pages, 50 blog posts, 50 collections and 500 assets, plus a 14-day trial of the paid features.

Basic is $71 a month for 100,000 API calls, 250GB, 20 pages, 100 posts, 100 collections and 1,000 assets. Advanced is $224 for 500,000 calls, 500GB, 50 pages, 500 posts and 2,000 assets. Professional is $359 for 1,000,000 calls, 1TB, 100 pages, unlimited posts, 1,000 collections, 3,000 assets and 3 locales. Enterprise is custom. Every plan includes unlimited users and components.

Verdict

The right call when the requirement is precisely "our app needs a blog" and the team is large. Unlimited users at $71 a month undercuts every per-seat option here at ten or more people.

The page and post caps are the catch. Model your content growth against the tier table before committing, because outgrowing a tier here is a doubling of cost rather than a metered overage.
