ApostropheCMS is a Node.js CMS whose distinguishing feature is in-context editing: editors change content directly on the rendered page rather than in a separate admin form. The core is MIT licensed and free to self-host.

Commercially it offers Pro for hosted use and Assembly for agencies running many sites from one deployment, which is a sensible shape for its audience.

Who ApostropheCMS is for

Agencies and teams on Node who want visual in-context editing with an open-source core they can self-host.

Less suitable if you want a pure content API, since Apostrophe leans toward rendering its own pages.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • In-context editing is genuinely good and closer to what non-technical editors expect than a form-based admin.
  • MIT-licensed core with no feature gating in the community edition.
  • Assembly gives agencies a real multi-site model rather than one deployment per client.
  • Node and MongoDB is a familiar stack for JavaScript teams.

Where it falls short

  • Primarily a page-rendering CMS, so headless is a supported mode rather than the main design.
  • MongoDB is required.
  • Smaller ecosystem than Strapi or Payload.
  • Pro at $199 a month for 5 editors is not cheap for what the community edition already does.

Verdict

A good option for agencies that want in-context editing without a SaaS bill, and the MIT core means the free path is real rather than a trial.

If you want an API-first CMS for a decoupled front end, Payload or Strapi fit that shape better.
