Contentrain review
Open source, self-hosted
Contentrain is a git-based CMS whose core tooling, covering the CLI, SDK, type generation and an MCP server, is MIT licensed with no usage limits. Content lives in your repository as JSON and is queried through generated types.
It is one of only a handful of platforms in this directory shipping an official MCP server rather than leaving that to the community.
Who Contentrain is for
Developers who want content in git with generated types, and teams experimenting with AI-assisted content workflows through MCP.
The usual git-based ceilings apply on volume and concurrent editing.
Strengths and limits
What it does well
- MIT-licensed core packages with unlimited users and no usage limits.
- An official MCP server, which very few vendors here provide.
- Cloud tiers start at $9 a month, which is the cheapest paid entry in the directory.
- Generated types mean the client and the content model stay in agreement.
Where it falls short
- Small and young project, so ecosystem and longevity are open questions.
- Cloud tier limits are expressed in AI messages, API messages and MCP calls, which is an unusual model to forecast.
- Git-based storage limits content volume and simultaneous editing.
- Limited editorial tooling for non-technical users.
Contentrain pricing
The open-source packages, covering the CLI, MCP, SDK, rules, skills and types, are MIT licensed and free with unlimited users and no usage limits.
Starter is $9 a month with 3 seats, 150 AI messages, 100 API messages, 5,000 MCP cloud calls, 100 form submissions, 2GB of CDN bandwidth and 1GB of media storage. Pro is $49 a month with 25 seats and proportionally higher limits. Enterprise is custom with unlimited seats, self-managed deployment, SSO and white labelling. Paid plans allow overage purchases at per-unit rates.
Verdict
Interesting for the MCP support and the genuinely free MIT core, and $9 a month is the cheapest paid tier here by a distance.
Project maturity is the risk. Good for a side project or an experiment with AI content workflows; think harder before a client depends on it.
