Penji review

Graphic design, Branding, Motion and video

Penji sells design in workstreams, where each workstream keeps one priority moving at a time. Essentials at $995 a month runs two, Agency Partner at $1,995 runs three, and Dedicated Team at $4,500 runs four. The pricing page equates those to roughly 2 to 4, 5 to 7 and 10 to 14 hours of daily work.

The tiers also change who steers the work. Essentials is self-managed, with a project manager and no art director. Agency Partner adds an art director, the same assigned creatives and a white-labelled client platform. Dedicated Team adds a senior art director, a creative pod, AI video production and front-end development.

Its FAQ says its designers are full-time employees across more than 20 countries. The company page traces Penji to a $1-a-month design service for nonprofits launched in April 2017.

Who Penji is for

Agencies and in-house marketing teams that need several pieces moving at once and will write their own briefs, particularly for ads, social content and landing pages. The Agency Partner tier is built for resellers, with a white-labelled platform and client folders.

One-person businesses with an occasional logo or flyer would be paying for parallel capacity they may not use, since the entry plan is already $995 a month.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • States the number of active workstreams on every plan, from two to four, instead of leaving the word unlimited undefined
  • Says its designers are full-time Penji employees rather than freelancers or gig workers
  • A 30-day full refund applies to new monthly subscriptions, and the terms say so as well as the FAQ
  • Source files download with one click, and the terms give the client all rights in what is delivered

Where it falls short

  • Essentials has no art director and no phone support, so briefing and direction rest with the client
  • The FAQ does not guarantee the same designer outside Dedicated Team, although Agency Partner lists the same assigned creatives
  • The refund covers monthly plans only; quarterly and yearly discounts come without it, and renewals are excluded
  • Access to design files ends when a subscription expires, per the terms, so files need exporting first

Penji pricing

Three plans are published: Essentials at $995 a month, Agency Partner at $1,995 and Dedicated Team at $4,500. Quarterly billing takes 15% off and yearly 20%. Each plan fixes the number of active workstreams, the turnaround and the level of creative direction, from a project manager on Essentials to a senior art director on Dedicated Team.

Essentials covers two workstreams, equal by Penji's own description to 2 to 4 hours of daily work, with a one business day turnaround. The 30-day money-back guarantee applies to monthly plans only.

Verdict

Penji's workstream model suits an agency or marketing team that needs two or three pieces in production at once and can brief well without an art director. The Agency Partner plan at $1,995 adds same-day turnaround, an art director and a white-labelled platform, which is the tier most resellers will be pricing.

Occasional users meet a $995 floor, a price that assumes steady weekly demand. The FAQ also stops short of guaranteeing the same designer below Dedicated Team, so brand consistency on the cheaper plans depends on requesting a favourite through the project manager.
