Enonic XP review

Open source, self-hosted

Reviewed by Eugene SuslovUpdated August 2026No affiliate links

Enonic XP is a Norwegian open-source content platform licensed under GPL-3.0, combining headless APIs with a visual page editor and built-in search. It is well established in Nordic public sector and larger private organisations.

The hybrid approach means marketers can compose pages visually while developers consume content through APIs, which suits organisations partway through a headless transition.

Who Enonic XP is for

Java organisations wanting an open-source platform with both headless delivery and visual page composition, particularly in the Nordics where the partner network is strongest.

Little reason to choose it elsewhere unless GPL and Java are both requirements.

Strengths and limits

What it does well

  • GPL-3.0 licensed with no open-core catch, so self-hosting is genuinely unrestricted.
  • Both headless APIs and a visual page editor, rather than forcing a choice.
  • Search is built in on Elasticsearch rather than being a separate integration.
  • Long public-sector track record with the compliance history that implies.

Where it falls short

  • Small community outside the Nordics, so finding developers and examples is harder.
  • GPL-3.0 is copyleft, which some organisations' policies exclude outright.
  • Java operational footprint.
  • Enonic Cloud pricing is not published.

Enonic XP pricing

Enonic XP is free under GPL-3.0 and self-hostable with no limits. Enonic Cloud, the managed offering, and commercial support are quote-only.

Verdict

A solid, genuinely open-source option for Java organisations, and the hybrid editor is a real advantage during a phased move to headless.

Outside the Nordics the ecosystem thinness is the main risk, and GPL-3.0 needs checking against your policy before you build on it.
